Campus
| | The physical ground on which the University stands. The University campuses are Casuarina, Alice Springs, Palmerston and Katherine Campus (Rural Studies) and Nhulunbuy. |
Census Date
| | The date by which all enrolment and payment arrangements for Commonwealth and non-Commonwealth Supported students must be finalised. Census dates are set by the University for each semesters and study periods. Census Dates must be published for the following year no later than 1 October of the current year. |
Certificate
| | A Vocational Education & Training qualification. See www.aqf.edu.au |
Certified Copy
| | A photocopy of an original document which has been certified by a Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Oaths, Police Officer or staff member of a tertiary institution as a true copy of the original document sighted by the certifier. The certification must be original; photocopies or facsimiles of certified copies are not acceptable. |
Change of Enrolment
| | The process by which an official change is made to an enrolment after it has been processed initially. This includes adding or withdrawing from a unit. Students must initiate this process in writing or online (available for HE only). |
Charles Darwin University
| | Charles Darwin University (CDU) was established on 1 January 2004 through the merger of Northern Territory University and Centralian College. |
CHESSN
| The Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) is a unique identifier that universities must use as of 2005 in communications with the Australian Government concerning a student who:
a) Is enrolled or seeking admission (via SATAC) to a course of study with the university; and
b) Has indicated that he or she is seeking Commonwealth assistance under the Higher Education Support Act 2003 for the units
The CHESSN will remain linked to students for the remainder of their academic life. |
Combined Degree
| | Consists of two awards for which all course requirements have been met through an approved program of study. Such a degree generally requires a longer period of study than for the individual awards comprising it, but the total study period may be less than that required to meet the requirements of the awards individually. Students are issued with two awards at the time of graduation. |
Commonwealth Assistance Form
| | Students who are enrolled in a Commonwealth Supported Place or who are requesting assistance under the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) must complete a request for Commonwealth assistance form. |
Commonwealth Assistance Notice
| All students who are enrolled with the university in at least one unit of study for that Semester or Study Period by the relevant census date for that unit, and have sought HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP for at least one unit of study will be sent a Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN) no later than 28 days after the relevant census date.
The CAN is also sent to students who occupy a Commonwealth Supported Place and are paying their fees-up front.
The CAN will include details about a student's enrolment details relating to the course and units as follows:
Personal details, CHESSN number, deferred and/or up-front fee payment details, loan fees (if applicable), discounts, total debt, and the total amount by which the student's Learning Entitlement has been reduced, and EFTSL values for units |
Commonwealth Supported Place
| | Is a Higher Education place for which the Commonwealth makes a financial contribution. The Commonwealth contributes to the cost of these places through the Commonwealth Grant Scheme (CGS). |
Competency- based training
| | Training which develops the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to achieve competency standards. It is not time based. |
Competency Standard
| | Vocational Education & Training units are determined mainly by industry, but also sometimes by enterprises for their own enterprise Training Packages. Each unit of competency contains: elements of competency, performance criteria, range of variables, and an evidence guide. Units of competency are grouped to make up qualifications in Training Packages. |
Competency
| | The ability to perform tasks and duties to the standard expected in employment. |
Concurrent Enrolment
| | Is the enrolment in more than one course at the same time either within a sector or across both Higher Education and Vocational Education & Training. |
Conjoint Degrees
| | Refer to situations where two institutions arrange to deliver an award or course and issue testamurs that contain both institutional logos. They should not be confused with combined degrees offered by the University (such as Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws). |
Core Competencies
| | Units of competency within a VET qualification that an industry has agreed are essential to be achieved if a person is to be accepted as competent at a particular level. All units may be core, but in many cases competency at a level will involve core units plus optional or specialisation units of competency. Core competencies are normally those central to work in a particular industry. |
Council
| The Charles Darwin University Council is the governing body of the Charles Darwin University. All acts done by the Council, or in the name of or on behalf of the University with the express or implied authority of the Council, shall be deemed to have been done by the University.
The Council consists of:

Eight persons appointed by the Administrator
One person elected by and from the full-time higher education academic staff of the University
One person elected by and from the full-time VET academic staff of the University
One person elected by and from the undergraduate students of the University
One person elected by and from the postgraduate students of the University
In accordance with the Charles Darwin University Act 2003, a member of Council must act solely in the interests of the university and not as a delegate or representative of a particular constituency when exercising a power or performing a function of office. |
Course Code
| | Group of letters or numbers or a combination of both which identifies a course for administrative purposes. |
Course of Study
| | A Higher Education course of study is described as either an Enabling Course; or Course of Study leading to a higher education award. Courses of study may include specialisations/sequences of study within the course of study. Each course of study will lead to one award only. |
Credit Points
| | A value allocated to individual units in the Higher Education sector indicating its contribution to the overall course requirements and to the enrolment load of a student. Most units are 10 credit points which represents normally 10 hours per week of study, or a quarter of a full time load for a semester. A full load for a semester is 40 credit points; a full load for the year is 80 credit points. |
Credit Point
| | Points which are allocated to individual units in the Higher Education Sector in order to give value to a unit, indicating its contribution to the requirements of a course and to the enrolment load of a student. Credit points are also an indicator of the amount of work the unit might entail. |
Credit Transfer - HE
| The process whereby a student is permitted to count towards her/his current course/qualification relevant units previously completed successfully.

Cross-Institutional Enrolment
| | An enrolment in part of a Higher Education course or a unit through another institution which, on successful completion, can be credited to your course at your home institution. Permission from the university must be sought prior to enrolment in order to guarantee credit. |
Curriculum
| | The specifications for a course or subject (module) which describe all the learning experiences a student undergoes, generally including objectives, content, intended learning outcomes, teaching methodology, recommended or prescribed assessment tasks, assessment exemplars, etc. |
